Wheelchair users or their carers have to put a lot more thought into daily tasks and days out that require a vehicle than others do. This is because their vehicles, known as WAVs (wheelchair accessible vehicles), cannot fit into standard parking spaces. If where they’re headed doesn’t have accessible parking, then chances are they must turn back home.

Also called disabled parking spaces, a wheelchair accessible parking space is a parking bay designed for vehicles used by those who use a wheelchair or other mobility devices. They are essential for these users for many reasons, which we’ll cover in this article.

What makes a parking space wheelchair accessible?

A space for wheelchair users is defined mostly by its size, which is larger to accommodate wheelchair users getting in and out of the vehicle.

As there are various types of wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs) with different access points, spaces have to be large enough to allow for any model. Some vehicles are accessed via the side, while others are accessed from the back, so the space must have room for either possibility.

Wheelchair users usually get into the vehicle via ramps or lifts, which is why the extra room is necessary. It’s also essential that the wheelchair user can easily navigate the space between their vehicle and the next one.

Other factors that make disabled spaces accessible for mobility device users are their level surface and proximity to entrances and exits. Accessible spaces are flat and they’re situated close to the entry point of the building or attraction for quick, easy, and comfortable access.

Why are wheelchair accessible parking spaces necessary?

The main purpose of these parking bays is to accommodate wheelchair users, giving them somewhere to park that is safe for getting in and out of the vehicle. It’s also necessary for convenience, as a wheelchair user may find travelling the distance of a large car park uncomfortable or tiring. It’s important to note that some wheelchair users are pushed by a caregiver, and there is always a chance that navigating across a carpark could be unsafe in this situation.

Another reason they are necessary is for the user’s independence. For some, having parking spaces that allow for their WAV makes the difference between being able to go somewhere and having to stay at home. By offering accessible spaces, people with mobility issues who rely on wheelchairs or mobility devices are able to participate in life’s activities, be they as simple as going to the supermarket, or spending a day at the zoo with friends or family.

Who can use wheelchair accessible parking spaces?

Disabled parking bays in the UK should only be used by Blue Badge holders. This is a permit held by people with significant mobility issues, or the parents or carer of a person with mobility issues. This badge means you can park in wheelchair accessible parking spots, whether it’s your vehicle or a vehicle you’re riding as a passenger in, even a taxi.

Do you think you may fit the requirements for one of these permits? You can apply for a Blue Badge on the GOV.uk website.

What are the rules for disabled parking spaces in the UK?

A person without a valid Blue Badge cannot park in a wheelchair accessible space in the UK. If someone is found parked in one of these spaces without a valid permit, they will be fined.

Businesses in the UK must take the right measures to ensure wheelchair users have access to their facilities. If they don’t provide clearly marked spaces with the necessary features that make it accessible, then the business may face legal consequences under the Equality Act 2010
