Many adaptations are available on the Motability Scheme at no additional cost, as long as they are fitted at the start of your lease. There might be an extra cost for larger, more complex adaptations.

Motability, the charity, runs several grant programmes to provide support for the cost of advance payments and adaptations for people who are unable to afford the solution they need to meet their disability needs.

We appreciate that many customers find it difficult to visit us to view our vehicles, so we offer a free, no-obligation home consultation and vehicle demonstration upon request. We can also talk you through our range of car adaptations to ensure you find the right one for your needs.

Motability FAQs

Who funds the Motability Scheme?

The Motability Scheme is delivered by Motability Operations Ltd; an independent commercial company, under contract to Motability; a registered national charity that sets the strategic policies and direction of the Motability Scheme, and oversees its performance to ensure that it continues to meet the needs of people with disabilities.

All Motability Scheme vehicles are leased by Motability Operations Ltd and the company is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Who is eligible for the Mobility Scheme?

You can apply to join the Motability Scheme if you receive one of the following disability allowances, with at least 12 months of the qualifying benefit remaining:

  • Higher rate mobility part of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Higher rate mobility part of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Enhanced rate mobility part of Adult Disability Payment (Scotland)
  • Higher rate mobility component of Child Disability Payment (Scotland)
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)

If you have less than 12 months left of your allowance, you will need to wait until it is renewed by your allowance provider.

You cannot apply to join the Scheme if you receive a lower rate or component of mobility allowance, or Attendance Allowance.

Can children join the Mobility Scheme?

Young people can join the Motability Scheme, but what they can do and how they join depends on their age and whether they are the customer or they have an appointee.

Children with disabilities can be awarded the higher rate mobility part of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) from their third birthday. You can apply before then and if they are eligible the allowance will begin when they turn three.

If a child has their allowance confirmed, you can apply for the Motability Scheme up to three months before their third birthday. The lease will only start when they have received their allowance.

Can I get a wheelchair accessible vehicle and a scooter or powered wheelchair with the Motability Scheme?

You can only have one lease on the Motability Scheme at a time. This means you cannot lease both a car or wheelchair accessible vehicle and a scooter or powered wheelchair at the same time.

Can two people in my home be on the Motability Scheme?

You can have as many people in your home on the Motability Scheme as you want, as long as they are all eligible to join.

You can only have one Motability Scheme vehicle each. How many non-Motability Scheme vehicles you have will not affect your eligibility.

What is included with the Mobility Scheme?

As well as a new car, wheelchair accessible vehicle, scooter, or powered wheelchair, you will receive the following with the Motability Scheme:

Insurance cover: Insurance cover from RSA Motability for up to three named drivers. You can change these at any time.

Servicing and MOT: Regular services and routine repairs, to keep your vehicle running perfectly.

Breakdown cover: RAC breakdown cover, so you can travel with peace of mind.

Support with your electric car: Home chargepoint installation, or access to the BP Pulse network of over 9,000 public chargepoints. Conditions apply.

Are vehicle adaptations covered by the Motability Scheme?

Many vehicle adaptations are available on the Motability Scheme at no additional cost, as long as they are fitted at the start of your lease. There might be an extra cost for larger, more complex adaptations.

If you are unable to afford essential adaptations, Motability, the charity, might be able to help.

The charity runs several grant programmes to provide support for the cost of advance payments and adaptations for people who are unable to afford the solution they need to meet their disability needs.

Will I need to pay vehicle tax on my Motability car?

If you qualify for the Motability Scheme, you are already receiving a qualifying mobility allowance which means you do not have to pay vehicle tax.

Unless you decide to tax your vehicle yourself or you live on the Isle of Man, it will be included with the lease and renewed automatically each year – you will not need to do anything.

Alternatively, you can choose to use your tax exemption on a private vehicle and pay the tax on your Motability car yourself. If this is the case, let us know when you apply.

How long is the lease and what do I do when it ends?

Leases generally run for three years from the date you got your car, or five years if you have a wheelchair accessible vehicle. You will see this date on your lease agreement.

At the end of your lease, you can:

  • Lease another vehicle through the Motability Scheme
  • See if you can keep your current vehicle for longer
  • Return your vehicle and have your mobility allowance reinstated
Will I have to pay anything with the Motability Scheme?

Your allowance provider will pay for the lease of the vehicle, although you might need to top this up with an Advance Payment. Our team will guide you through the application process and any applicable costs.
